Équation

Two exhibitions in Quebec

Festival du Son et de l'Image 2000 in Montreal:
Mutine demonstrated the Équation Gaya.

"ShowStopper!"
Soundstage! Magazine

"These five-way ceramic speakers seemed to hold their tweeters suspended in front of their cones and were designed to provide an image which could stand on its own, regardless of the listener's location.
"Go ahead," said Pascal, "move over to that chair, to the right side of the room." I did. Stevie Ray Vaughn was still where I had left him, between the speakers. "Now move over to that other chair, behind the speakers.."
"You must be kidding," I said, as I slowly walked ten feet behind the speakers. Stevie Ray kept on singing, his image fixed solidly in space.
It was an amazing experience. Did I mention that the quality of the sound was as wonderful as the image? Sweet, natural and finely detailed, it originated on a CEC TL1X belt drive CD transport coupled to an Audiomat Maestro 24/96 DAC and amplified by the Audiomat Solfège, a 40 watt integrated tube amp. Before I left the room I saw a serious looking gentleman, who had been listening to us all along, tracing back my steps through the various listening locations, his eyes anchored on a point in space, between the speakers. He just kept shaking his head."

History of the brand

Christian Clobus is passionate about acoustics. Originally trained as an electronics technician, he created in 1972, Equation, a division of Clofis, a Belgian corporation which imports electronic components for loudspeakers in the Netherlands. Christian originally distributed Audax products, and a few years later Focal products, followed by those of other manufacturers.
He is therefore well placed to follow his passion: the design and tuning of high-end loudspeakers. He constantly researches and analyzes the market for the best performing components.

Christian is the "re-inventor" of the series crossover (Briggs has already discussed this in his book, but ÉQUATION was the first modern manufacturer at the beginning of the 1980's, to apply this principle and possesses the greatest expertise in the world on this subject). The sonic virtues of employing a series crossover results in a greater precision of the stereophonic image, better dynamics, and more precise control of the drivers. The use of a series crossover makes bi wiring unnecessary.

In 1987, he decided to create an acoustical system based on a philosophy of musical purity and “emotional involvement” while respecting the following criteria: the timbre of instruments and voices; the spatiality of sound; true stereophonic reproduction; and a loudspeaker that is both elegant and discrete.

To attain these goals, Christian used the latest technology developed by European manufacturers of different transducer materials. In particular, for the reproduction of midrange and bass frequencies he chose a driver with a Kevlar membrane and a voice coil made of Kapton. For the reproduction of high frequencies, he chose a ceramic inverted dome driver.

Moreover, in order to ensure extraordinary stereophonic reproduction, Christian designed a crossover with a constant impedance and phase correction. To house this two-way system, he utilized a dark narrow column covered with a black fabric, mounted on a square black lacquered stand. Hence, the Model 2, the first acoustic speaker in the ÉQUATION line was born.

Since the early years, ÉQUATION has developed loudspeakers, which have continually succeeded in integrating into their designs leading edge technology. Christian's designs have also evolved aesthetically, with respect to their elegance, simplicity, and tasteful finish. ÉQUATION has offered since 1995 a line of loudspeakers finely finished in natural pinched Spanish Maple.

Regarding technical specifications, ÉQUATION uses a new generation midrange/bass driver with a magnesium cone employing a proprietary magnetic system that reduces intermodulation distortion by 50%.
High frequency reproduction is achieved, in the model 25 and higher, by a pure ceramic inverted dome tweeter, coupled to a magnetic circuit with a double magnet. Here also, ÉQUATION possesses an exceptional mastery of these components, having used them for more than 20 years!

At the beginning of the years 2000, Christian moved to Paris, far from his laboratory and the woodmakers fab that have allowed Équation to show the superior quality they are famous for; he then transferred the manufacturing to Mutine in Quebec.

Équation loudpeakers have gained an unique reputation amongst those fortunate enough to pair them with musical and performing systems.
The brand has decided in 1999 to transfer the European production to Quebec. Since then, we work with our European friends to renew the line, with our usual perfectionnism.
We have the pleasure to announce that the Canadian versions will be progressively launched around the end of 2007.
